This group of travel essays chronicle a Canadian traveler’s zany tours of Southeast Asia. This is much more than a travelogue; it’s a commentary on the life of a freelance writer dealing with rejection slips; the how-tos and accommodations of a Westerner teaching English in communist Vietnam, and the foibles of taxi drivers trying to scam their customers. The author’s writing is very visual and tongue-in-cheek humorous. This is a worthwhile read for those contemplating either the writing life or becoming a vagabond. We rated it three hearts.

This is an absolutely fabulous how-to about the ins and outs of traveling Europe in an American RV. Having lived in Germany a total of five years and having tent-camped all around Europe, I cringed at the thought of this book’s topic. I said to myself, “There’s just no way this can be done without a wheelbarrow full of money.” I was wrong and the authors are right. Their book provides all the info, how-to’s, and info contacts to assist RVers in shipping their vehicle over, acquiring both the knowledge and necessary adapters for all the different electrical and gas hookups, and knowing where to go, how to get there, and what to expect once they do.
If you are a serious RVer and have enough sense of adventure to try this, you absolutely must own this book! The authors have been there, done that, and are going again! We rated this informative guidebook five hearts.

This Sixth Edition of Harry Pariser’s EXPLORE THE VIRGIN ISLANDS is testament to the author’s familiarity with and love for the Caribbean. Blending history, destinations, and a thorough listing of what to do and where to do it, this guidebook covers it all. The handy size and lightweight paperback format make it one of the easier guides to slip into a carry-on for pre-trip reading as well as into a beach tote for during-the-trip consultation.
A frequent Virgin Islands visitor, I just returned from my most recent sojourn. As familiar as I am with the Virgins, I consulted Pariser’s book more than once during the trip, and learned a quite a lot about all the islands, their histories, and their unique offerings. Of note is Pariser’s inclusion of information about Water Island, the fourth U.S. Virgin Island. Most guidebooks omit Water Island entirely. Additionally, his descriptions of island flora and fauna are accurate, informative, and entertaining.
A semi-formal check of restaurants, beaches, activities, and sights on St. Thomas (USVI) indicates that Pariser is right on the mark with locations, pricing, and hours. The guide was invaluable as we made our way to the center of the island, seeking out Tillet Gardens in Tutu. Pack this book and a bikini, and you’re set for a delightful vacation in the U.S. and/or British Virgin Islands. We rated this book four hearts.

This is an extraordinarily comprehensive travel guide to twelve heartland college towns. They are each a cultural oasis in their respective areas. We rated this helpful travel guide four hearts.

This is an excellent collection of coming-of-age essays. The author, Steve White, has mastered the art of tongue-in-cheek, mischievous humor such as written by Dave Barry, Erma Bombeck, and Patrick McManus. Family Vacations is all about growing up in the Midwest, pestering sisters as an art form, and dealing with wacky parents. Many of the essays are of the laugh-out-loud variety, while others will merely cause one to snigger and snort. This is a good book to read out loud to one’s children. (My children always loved for me to read books such as these, because I always turned such interesting shades of purple while attempting to breath in between guffaws. We rated it four hearts.
Title: Nomad: Letters From a Westward Lap of the World

Price: $12.00
Publishing Date: 2004
Reader: Isabelle A. Harman
Rating:
Before beginning his escapade into the relatively unknown, Jason Jones, a thirty-something gifted storyteller and adventurer, did a bit of soul searching. At the beginning of his tale, he sums up what is out there for him by writing, “The jungles of Southeast Asia, palaces in India, a safari in Africa, great cities such as Tokyo, Istanbul and Buenos Aires–there was such a rich and wonderful palette from which to choose the colors of my journey.” Be sure to take this trip with him. Mr. Jones whets your appetite for travel. If you don’t have the means to travel, don’t fret; you can travel vicariously with Jason. He magically brings to life the traditions, customs, and people of lands far away and seemingly unreachable. His goal was to write a book about travel from the perspective of someone who is in the midst of the act. He does that and much more by providing innocent and intriguing tales, as well as tidbits of travel tips. In the end, he pulls together the highlights and impressions of his fourteen-month world tour in a “frequently asked questions” type of epilogue. Magically written, the book transports the reader to wherever he goes. We rated this book four hearts.

New Mexico Chow is not a yuppies’ guide to esoteric food experiences; rather, it is an excellent guide to good, everyday fare throughout the New Mexico central region. Although it is organized alphabetically, it has three different indexes by cuisine type, location, and price, which help the reader to find just the right kind of restaurant for his or her needs. Although regional in scope, this book’s area draws a wide range of tourists and travelers, so its appeal goes far beyond its geographical boundaries. We rated it four hearts.

This is an interesting book about how one couple made the transition from working lives to retiring and going on the road. The main part of the book addresses the author’s concerns and joys. The best part of the book is in its resource sections in the back pages. Especially helpful are a myriad of check lists the author and her husband use to make sure they are doing it right. Chasing Summer is a very interesting travelogue of a newly-wed couple’s 18-month-long odyssey around the world. It is unusual in that it is based on monthly e-mails they sent home to family and friends during their adventures. The style is straightforward and easy to understand. Black and white photos are liberally dispersed throughout the book. The Niemanns, both working professionals (lawyer and architect) up until the time of their journey, tell their stories in the same spirit of adventure as their travels. A windfall from a real estate sale funded their trip and over 1,000 people vicariously traveled with them via their monthly emails. A unique book, we rated it four hearts.

If you want to know what full-time RVing is like for women, this is the book to read. Fifty-two women, some happily married, some divorced, some widowed, some single by choice, and one precocious fourteen-year-old home-schooled teenager who writes like she’s 40, describe in short essays what life on the open road is like. This book is invaluable for women considering such a life style. Although it addresses some of the mechanical and physical driving issues, its real strength is in the sense of community and deeply spiritual connectivity these women have with one another and other Rvers. This is an essential read for its intended audience. We rated it four hearts.

This is the cutest travel book for families headed for Florida's Disney World complex. The park's designers purposely built in images of Mickey (and a few other characters) into the construction of the park, the hotels, the restaurants, etc. Many people go on scavenger hunts to find them. The author has organized six different scavenger hunts for nearly 400 images. Now you know what you can do while your stomach recovers from all the wild rides.
The book is filled with clues and more detailed hints if you really get stuck. There is an index so you can easily look up the Mickeys in whatever location you're in. This book is a delightful supplement to other guide books available from this same company. It's so neat, one of my reviewers stole it and I haven't seen it since (I guess I'll just have to wait and see who takes their vacation in Florida this year.) We rated this book five hearts.

The Worldwide Multilingual Phrase Book is a basic phrase book that covers the languages of the major language family groups and several of the minor ones. It is not intended to be the be-all-end-all answer to language aids; however, it will get a traveler started. It's especially good in its suggestions for language self-learning. Although it could have provided more pronunciation guidelines, it had the basic words and phrases right that were familiar to this reviewer (the management of linguists was part and parcel of my intell officer's background).
The most important value of this phrase book was the information on linguistic relationships. The author's personal experience of picking up on all these languages himself is encouraging to his readers. We rated this book four hearts.

Bed & Breakfast Country Inns / The Official Guide to American Historic Inns are two wonderful guides to classic bed and breakfast inns throughout America. They don't include all, but they include the best. My wife and I were pleased to see a listing for the Red Fox Inn in Middlebury, Virginia (purportedly the second oldest inn in America), where we spent our honeymoon in late 1972.
This is a must series for your travel and leisure sections. The small drawings of many of the inns give the reader a good idea of what to look forward to. We rated this series four hearts.

The European Menu Translator is an incredibly handy guide to eating out in Europe. Menus can be real puzzlers if they are printed in the native language only. This is not a problem in areas catering to tourists; however, some of the better food to be found is in non tourist areas-an equivalent to a blue-plate special cafe in small town America. This excellent guide can assist the traveler in French, German, Italian, and Spanish. This reviewer spent five years in Germany and can vouch for the accuracy and completeness in that language (I only wish there had been one available for the three years I spent in Korea). This guide will sell very well in your travel/foreign language sections. We give this guide five hearts.
